Want a great idea for the dad who has everything. Why not go old school and buy him a high tech sound system complete with turntable and vinyl records. Now why would anyone want a gift like this in the age of digital music available online. Well, if you have never heard the rich sounds of analog coming directly from sound waves cut into vinyl records, you are in for a treat.

Take your dad or granddad back to a day where some very sophisticated technology made turntables, cartridges, speakers, and amplifiers the orgins of some of the most amazing and beautiful sounds you have ever heard.

This is truly the gift for the dad who has everything. And, there are several components that family members can go together to buy. Mom might buy him the turntable and cartridge (the device that holds the stylus), and the kids might pitch in to buy an amplifier or speakers. The grandkids might could even buy dad a supply of classic or new vinyl records.

A simple but very good system is only a few hundred dollars, consisting of a turntable, cartridge, and speakers with the amplifier built in. Classic records can be obtained and flea markets, but I recommend buying classic records that have been reissued so you can purchase them brand new. These records will set you back about fifteen bucks apiece for a long play album.

Playing a record on a good sound system is like smoking a pipe. It’s slow and inconvenient but the very act of placing the record on the table and carefully placing the stylus on the turning vinyl is a ritual that brings peace and “coolness” to the heart.
