“IMPRINTING” on GOD
YouTube is full of adorable videos consisting of a mama duck with her ducklings crossing highways, walking down sidewalks, and swimming in fountains. The mama duck won’t fly because her babies would not be able to follow her, so she walks and faces down dangerous traffic, insurmountable barriers, and even dogs, cats, and humans to get her ducklings home to the water. Now, the baby ducks help with this because they have a mechanism fixed within them from birth. It’s called “imprinting” which is an obsessive desire to follow whatever they imprint on, usually the larger mama duck.
In much the same way, believers in Jesus should “imprint” upon God and follow him wherever he goes. He is our only focus and we cannot even think of going another way. And if you’ve imprinted upon Jesus, you’ve made the most important decision imaginable, which is to follow Him, to focus on Him, and to love Him with nothing else in your field of vision. You have followed Jesus/ command to be a disciple. The same command Jesus gave to those He recruited as His first disciples when He said in the Bible, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
