OUR MORTAL ENEMY
Rev. Paul Yonggi Cho once said, “Without Jesus, we are no match for the devil; but with Jesus Christ, the devil is no match for us.” Rev. Cho must have understood that the forces of evil are strong. Satan is more conniving than we are. He is more deceptive than we are. And his sworn desire is to trip us up and cause us to fail.
Why is the devil our mortal enemy? Because he hates the Lord, and we are created in the image of God. But we have a powerful friend in Jesus who can overcome the forces of evil. And in the Bible passage below we see how He casts out evil from a demon possessed man. So, as you read remember to trust in Jesus. Then you will be able to say as Paul said, “Greater is He that is in us, that he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)
(Mark 1:21-28) 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
God is the author of all the physical laws and, as such, has control over them. This fact is well-illustrated in the Bible passage below when a government official came to Jesus, begging Him to heal his son saying, “Come, before my child dies.” But, showing His lordship over time and space, Jesus healed the man’s son remotely. As you read about this incident, you will see that the Bible is teaching us that the Lord is supernatural. And, knowing this, you can be confident to pray big prayers to a big God who will meet big needs for you, if you but only trust in Him.
(John 4:46-54) 46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” 49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So, he and his whole household believed. 54 This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
