In the Bible we have the record of the Apostle Paul who wrote in his letter to the church in Galacia, “There is neither…male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28). Many people characterize the Bible and Christianity as sexist…how wrong they are! Jesus Christ lifted women from their low status in the ancient world to equals, created by God and precious to him. No longer were women property or viewed as lowly and uneducated. Christianity lifted women to such a high status that famous missiologist Dr. Rodney Stark once stated that ancient Christianity was almost a women’s movement, and then stated that he didn’t know why every woman in the ancient world did not follow Jesus as savior and lord. And in the Bible passage below, which is are scripture reading for today, we see Jesus including women in His inner circle of leaders and supporters.
(Luke 8:1-3) 1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
